What Septic System Excavation Involves

Septic excavation is the earthwork portion of a private system installation. We dig the tank pit, excavate the drainfield cells to the depth and grade the design specifies, and trench the distribution lines that run between the tank and the field. That is what we do. What we do not do: soil evaluation, percolation testing, system design, or permitting through Clark County Environmental Health. Those steps happen before we're involved, and they have to — our work follows an approved plan, not the other way around.

The full sequence for a new system is: a licensed site evaluator assesses whether the soil can absorb the property's daily load; a designer draws the system to match what the evaluation found; Clark County reviews and approves the design; then we do the earthwork to that stamped plan. Owners who call us before a design exists are calling in the wrong order, and we'll tell them so. Starting the earthwork without an approved design creates problems — depth, spacing, and grade are not guesses, and a drainfield excavated wrong has to be dug again.

What we do include, beyond the digging itself: coordinating with the tank supplier on delivery sequence, handling the material we cut out of the drainfield area, and protecting the completed drainfield from equipment traffic once the cells are open. When You Actually Need It

A private septic system is the only option for most unincorporated Clark County acreage. If the property address is Hockinson, Brush Prairie, Yacolt, or anywhere else outside a city limit, there is almost certainly no municipal sewer at the property line. That is the starting condition for the majority of calls we get on this work.

Beyond new construction, there are two situations where existing-system earthwork comes up. First: a system that has reached the end of its life or failed outright, which requires digging up the old tank and drainfield and installing a replacement. Second: a structural addition that increases daily load beyond what the existing system was designed to handle — a second dwelling unit, an ADU, or converting a seasonal structure to full-time occupancy. In those cases the evaluator has to assess whether the current field has remaining capacity or whether the field needs to be expanded or replaced.

When do you NOT need a new system? If the property is inside a city limit and sewer service is available at the property line, connecting to the municipal system is generally required — a private septic is not permitted as an alternative. And if a site evaluation comes back showing the soil won't absorb the daily load, no amount of excavation changes that result. We'll do the earthwork, but we can't fix a site that a licensed evaluator says won't work.

How the Work Gets Done

The sequence matters, and skipping a step causes problems. Here's how we run a septic excavation job from first contact to finished ground.

Before we schedule anything, we confirm that the design is approved and in hand. We need the stamped plan on site — not a sketch, not a verbal description of what the evaluator found. Depth, grade, setback from the property line and structures, and cell dimensions all come off that document.

Once we have a start date, we white-line the excavation boundary and give utility locate notice under RCW 19.122.030 — not less than two and not more than ten full business days before the work-to-begin date. We give that notice ourselves on every job. Washington keeps legal responsibility with the excavator regardless of who gives the call, so we don't rely on the general contractor or the owner to make it.

On site, we open the tank pit first. Depth varies by design; most tanks need to sit at a specific invert elevation relative to the house outlet, and that governs how deep we go. We cut out a clean pit with firm walls so the tank sets level without settling. The tank supplier delivers and sets the tank — our job is the hole and the backfill around the tank once it's seated and inspected.

Drainfield excavation is where precision becomes critical. We work cell by cell, tracking depth and grade against the design at every pass. The cells must not be over-excavated — digging too deep destroys the natural bearing soil that the system depends on, and that cannot be undone by adding material back in. We use a laser level and check frequently rather than eyeballing grade.

Once the cells are open and the distribution trenches are cut, we stop driving equipment over the drainfield area. That is a hard rule. Compaction in the drainfield kills the absorption capacity that the whole system is built around. If material needs to come off the site, it leaves before the field is exposed — not afterward, when the only route runs across open cells.

What Clark County Ground Changes

Septic work in Clark County runs on the county's permitting calendar, not the city's. If the property is unincorporated — anything outside the incorporated limits of Vancouver, Camas, Washougal, Battle Ground, Ridgefield, La Center, or the town of Yacolt — the permit counter is Clark County Environmental Health. That is a meaningful distinction for owners who have pulled permits inside a city and assume the process is the same. It is not. The agencies are separate, the forms are different, and the inspection sequence can differ.

Ground conditions across Clark County vary more than the map suggests. The elevation spread runs from 49 feet at Salmon Creek to 712 feet at Camas, and a lot changes across that range. Higher ground — the parcels around Hockinson at 387 feet, Yacolt at 709 feet, the Camas benches — tends to drain more aggressively and firms up earlier in the season than the low ground along the Columbia. Lower parcels near the river hold moisture longer, and in a wet spring that means the access route to a rural drainfield may be soft even when the calendar says it should be workable.

Rain falls through fall, winter, and spring across this region and generally stops around mid-June. The dry window runs through September. Scheduling septic earthwork for that window is not always possible — sometimes an inspection timeline or a construction sequence forces wet-season work — but when owners have the choice, the dry months reduce the risk of rutting the drainfield area before work is complete.

Access on rural parcels is consistently the factor that surprises people. A drainfield that looks close to the road on a plot map may be 400 feet up a soft seasonal drive, with no turnaround room and a gate that won't pass a standard excavator on a lowboy. We look at access before we price the job. On parcels where a full-size machine won't reach, the answer is a compact excavator and more hours — which changes the number, and we'd rather say that at the estimate than the morning the truck shows up.

What It Costs

Most residential septic excavation in Clark County lands somewhere between $1,500 and $6,500, though large replacement jobs that involve removing an existing system and installing a new one can push past that range. What moves the number inside the band are four things: how deep the tank pit has to go, how many drainfield cells the design calls for, how far the excavated material has to travel to a disposal site, and how restricted the site access is.

The drainfield size is not our decision — it comes from the approved design, which is based on the evaluator's findings about the soil and the property's daily load. We can't quote the drainfield portion without seeing the design, because the cell count and total square footage aren't known until the design is drawn. Phone quotes on septic excavation that don't reference a specific design are made up. Ours aren't.

Haul distance matters on rural parcels because the material that comes out of the drainfield area — often topsoil and native material that isn't suitable to backfill over a septic system — has to go somewhere. On an acreage parcel there may be a place on the property to stockpile it. On a tighter site, it leaves by truck, and the disposal distance is truck time. Both scenarios are priceable; they just price differently, and we need to see the site before we can say which applies.

Do you design the septic system or evaluate our soil?

No, on both counts. Soil evaluation is done by a licensed site evaluator who assesses whether the soil can absorb the property's daily load. System design is drawn by a designer based on what the evaluation found. We do the earthwork to the approved design once those two steps are finished. Calling us before the design is approved puts the cart ahead of the horse.

Does the design have to be approved before you start digging?

Yes. We work from the stamped, county-approved plan. Depth, grade, cell dimensions, and setbacks all come from that document. Starting without it means guessing at measurements that can't be wrong — and if we have to re-dig because the design changes, that's a second mobilization and a second day of work. We don't schedule earthwork until the plan is in hand.

Can vehicles or equipment drive over the drainfield area after installation?

No. Driving over a completed drainfield compacts the soil and reduces or destroys the absorption capacity the system depends on. Once the cells are open we stop all equipment traffic across that zone. Material that needs to leave the site leaves before the field is exposed, not after. This is non-negotiable and we plan the job sequence around it.

We do the earthwork to whatever design the county approves — but we can't excavate our way around a site that doesn't have adequate absorption. That determination belongs to the evaluator and the designer, not us.
